MARIETTA, GA – This week’s Alumni Spotlight features Thunder LB3 Alums: Jeff Durden (Navy), Bo Powell (Utah), Blake Garrett (Young Harris), Zach Stephenson (Young Harris) and Ben Corrigan (Lenior-Rhyne).

 

Jeff Durden (Class of 2016, LSM, McCallie)

In last Saturday’s win over UMBC Durden led the Mids’ by grabbing a team-high five ground balls and forcing four turnovers. He played a pivotal role in the defense’s effort in the third and fourth quarters that held UMBC off the scoreboard for more than 15 minutes, while the Mids went on a 3-0 run en route to a 7-5 win. For his performance made him Navy’s first-ever defensive player (outside of a goalkeeper) to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Durden is currently leading the team in ground balls with 10, he also stands atop the Mids’ caused turnovers list. Navy go on the road to face Boston University on February 24.

Bo Powell (Class of 2017, Attack, Greater Atlanta Christian)

Powell had an impressive collegiate debut last week for Utah in their season opener victory over Cal Poly with a hat-trick and an assist. He added another goal in their 16-5 win against the Arizona Wildcats. The Utes are currently undefeated (3-0) and will take to the road once again for its next game against Texas on March 1 and SMU on March 3.

 
 

Garrett Blake (Class of 2015, Midfield, Roswell)

Blake led Young Harris with three goals and added an assist against 17th ranked Saint Leo last Friday. Then on Sunday (February 18), the Mountain Lions, had their first win of the season in an 8-5 upset victory over 19th ranked Florida Tech where Blake had two assists. Starting off the season with four nationally ranked opponents, picked up their first-ever victory in 10 tries against a nationally ranked NCAA Division II opponent in the program’s history.

 

Zach Stephenson (Class of 2015, FOGO, McCallie)

In the matchup against No. 17 Saint Leo, Stephenson led the Mountain Lions winning 20 of 28 faceoffs (71.4%) and 15 ground balls. Then in upset victory over No. 19 Florida Tech, he went 11 of 17 at the X (64.7%) giving Stephenson an overall faceoff winning percentage of 68.9% for the weekend. Young Harris will host the Maryville Saints on February 23.

   

Ben Corrigan (Class of 2014, Midfield, Chattahoochee)

Corrigan helped the Bears rally from a four-goal deficit to pull off an improbable double overtime win over No. 9 Seton Hill (14-13) with three goals and a pair of assists last Saturday. This makes it the second straight week, Lenoir-Rhyne defeated a highly-ranked team. Then on Monday the Bears pulled off its second victory in three days with an 11-6 triumph over Molloy. The program’s 4-0 start is the best in the school’s eight-year history. The No. 3 Bears will host No. 14 Colorado Mesa on February 24.
